Kun’tewiktuk: A Mi’kmaw Adventure is a fantasy adventure game inspired by Mi’kmaw legends and folklore. It takes place in Unama'ki ("Land of the Fog"), which is known today as Cape Breton Island, Canada. It chronicles the adventures of two young siblings Wasuek (Mi'kmaw for "Flower") and her brother U'n (Mi'kmaw for "Fog"). The siblings get separated one summer morning and they go on an adventure through the spirit world to reunite.
Kun'tewiktuk (pr. "gon-dew-ik-duk") is the Mi'kmaw word for "the place of the rock". The Mi'kmaq (pr. "meeg-ah-mah") are indigenous peoples who are among the original inhabitants in the Atlantic Provinces of Canada. Oral history and archeological evidence place the Mi’kmaq in the region for more than 10,000 years.
The game is a magical journey filled with mythical characters and features narrative segments presented in Mi'kmaw.
The game's genre is best described as a fantasy adventure. It’s played in third-person perspective, and the player has access to a menu system that allows them to assign and switch weapons and abilities at important moments when they are needed.
Players get to experience the adventure through two unique player perspectives that alternate between quests. Players will collect special abilities drawn from Mother Earth as they complete objectives.
Our story begins many years ago in the Mi'kmaw island territory known as Unama'ki – land of the fog.
One summer morning, when Wasuek awoke abruptly. Feeling something wasn’t right, she quickly spun to wake her brother U’n but only found an empty bed. Her sense of urgency grew as she searched for him, but she could find no tracks or evidence of him anywhere.
It was as if he just... disappeared.
Frustrated and disheartened, she ran into the forest and only stopped when her legs failed her. There she collapsed, tired, angry, and feeling helpless.
She eventually fell asleep.
Wasuek awakens to find herself surrounded by small troll-like creatures, the Wiklatmu’j – the Little People. She’s frightened, but quickly remembers that these are peaceful creatures that have taught her ancestors many things, including the skills of hunting, fishing, and building shelter.
These friendly creatures explain that her brother had been taken to the spirit world by an Evil Creature that feeds on those of pure heart and brave spirit. They offer to help her enter the spirit realm.
Wasuek, without hesitation, accepts their offer and sets off to rescue her brother.
We officially announced the project to the media in June.
